The Message

Green Ragas performances include background video (projected behind the band), specially created by Chinmaya Dunster. His stunning footage, inspiring messages and basic information about the issues facing our environment today highlight the fact that the people most immediately affected by environmental degradation are the poorest of the poor.

"Thank you for your valuable contribution to the British Council's Climate Change Awareness Campaign."

Messages we Project

A beautiful world

1 Born Into A Beautiful World

Video: Inspiring footage of natural beauty.

Text: All of us here at this concert were born into a beautiful world. A world rich in diversity. A world teeming with life. A world in balance.

This beautiful world we inherited. Will we pass it on when our children are gone?

What kind of world are we going to leave for our children?

It is in our hands

2 It’s in Our Hands (Blue Lotus)

Video: Images of the earth held in human hands

Text: It’s in our hands. Greenhouse gas emissions. Global warming. Climate chaos. Sea level rise. Global water shortage. The choices we make now determine Earth’s future.

It's in our hands.

Sad Earth

3 Sookhi Dararein (Sad Earth)

Video: Footage of environmental destruction and it’s effects on the poor.

Text: Barak Obama talking about climate change to the UN: “We risk consigning future generations to an irreversible catastrophe.“

The science is clear: Unless we curb greenhouse emissions quickly, we risk our future. Is that the future we want? For ourselves. Or for our children?

Smiles from off the road

4 Smiles from off the Road in the Himalayas

Video: Smiling faces from remote farming communities.

Text: We, the farmers of the Himlalyas, greet you with our smiles. Although we are poor, we find a lot to smile about. But we are worried by the changing climate. The rains no longer come on time, or come as great storms.... We will all suffer if we do not tackle climate change. A big change is needed, for your sake and ours. We greet you with our smiles, and we hope you smile with us.

Ocean bed

5 Oceans

Video: Oceans, coral reefs.

Text: Greenhouse gases from the air dissolve in the ocean and make it more acid. As a result a quarter of the worlds coral reefs are already destroyed. Warming oceans and melting glaciers mean rising sealevels worldwide. The projected one-meter rise by 2100 could displace 125 million people on the coasts of South Asia alone. Are we prepared to face the first of millions of climate change refugees?

Dry food in open sacks

6 Your Food – Our Work

Video: Food production.

Text: Your Food. Our Work. Climate change is affecting our work of feeding you. We farmers face more extreme weather events.... We fishermen face increasing storms at sea to bring you your food. Our catch is dropping. The oceans are no longer so productive…. We farmers and fishermen are going to need all the support you can give us if we are to continue feeding you.

But I am doing the best I can

7 The Hummingbird Song

Video: A cartoon of a little hummingbird, who drops tiny drops of water on a forest fire. “I’m doing my best!” she answers, when the other animals tell her that her actions are hopeless.

Will we be the last generation to see truly wild animals?

8 Animals

Video: Animals in the wilderness.

Text: The IUCN ‘Red List’ lists as under threat of extinction a quarter of the world’s mammals and 36% of all assessed species.

Poaching, habitat destruction, and now climate change on top.

Will we be the last generation to see truly wild animals?

The butterfly effect

9 The Butterfly Effect

Video: Butterflies.

Text: Can a butterfly flapping its wings in New York change the path of a cyclone in Beijing? All life on earth is interconnected. Everything we do affects everything else.... Your individual actions can influence a chain of events leading to large-scale consequences. No one of us is insignificant. Not one of our actions is insignificant. We are all part of the whole.

You can lead

10 You Can Lead – Join Us

Video: Indian achievements in technological solutions to environmental problems and Indian organizations working for change.

Text: India can lead - India has the fourth largest installed wind power capacity in the world.... As the worlds largest democracy Indians can influence their government and insist that India becomes a world leader in emerging green technologies. You can lead! Join us in the fight against climate change!

Remember us

11 Remember Us!

Video: Smiles from Adivasis of Kerala.

Text: We, India’s adivasis and dalits bid you farewell with our smiles. We, the poorest of the poor, have paid the price for your industrial development. We smile and we trust that when you leave this concert you will remember us.

International Collaboration Tracks

Source of life giving waters

Moonsong (The Himalayas)

Video: Mountains, rivers, biodiversity of the Himalayas.

Text: The Earth’s ‘Third Pole’. Origin of 10 major river systems. Source of life-giving waters sustaining nearly one-fifth of humanity. Global warming and decreased snowfall are fast shrinking Himalayan glaciers. At current rates rivers like the Ganga will only flow seasonally. One of the world’s most fragile ecological zones faces climate change chaos

Since independance India has lost half its forest cover

Forests and Climate Change

Video: Forests.

Text: Forests soak up greenhouse gases from the air and store them. They therefore help mitigate global warming by reducing CO2. Everyone can help fight climate change by planting trees and protecting forests. “Do not cut down the forest with its tigers. The tigers stand guard over the forests. the forests protect their tigers.” Mahabharata
